Tesla Motors’ confirmation that it nearly tripled the amount of land it holds for the gigafactory is making waves this week. One question that has yet to be confirmed, however, is whether it plans to double the size of the actual gigafactory plant as well.

Storey County records showed that the maker of electric cars and Tesla Energy storage battery products purchased additional land at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center earlier in the spring, almost tripling the site’s original 1,000 acres. The purchase includes 1,864 acres of vacant land for $1.64 million, records show.

“It’s just over 1,900 acres total with 1,800-plus acres for viewshed,” said Tesla Motors spokeswoman Alexis Georgeson. “The purchase gives us the opportunity for future growth.”
